its nice to hear that youre not into all the new-fangled flippy-dippy stuff. although i appreciate modern skating, ive witnessed far too many kids getting pissed off that they cant land the latest switch-heel-whatever down eighty stairs, snapping their deck on purpose and then moaning that they cant afford a new deck.
skating is all about fun. just go with it and whatever comes out is all good. back in the day, me and my friends were all sketchy as hell, but we loved every minute of it, making a trick was a bonus, but never the be-all and end-all.
theres nothing like the rush of bombing a hill. skateboarding in its purest form cannot be beaten.
have fun dude.

maybe this topic should have been posted in 'chat' but never mind. Wink

I think there is a lot to be said for a little bit of devolution .I like the odd flip trick , theres no harm but going down a big hill so fast it makes your eyes water is so much fun and sliding glove are a great laugh!Ok so its not for everyone but its highly underated

People get their adrenaline rush in different ways I guess Roll Eyes
I agree with you, bombing and sliding is where it's at for me these days and has always been a big part of what kept me in the game.
Right from the start I always had to descend at least two big hills to get down town to meet up with all my mates, and that was always the best bit...kinda got bored once I'd got to the spot! Undecided
I never got much good at ollies (so long as I could clear the rapidly approaching curb I was satisfied!) and this "disability" kind of kept me out of the running for the 90's but I didn't let it bother me too much.
After about 5 years I said to myself "Look,if you had any natural talent for tricks you'd have discovered it by now,so either give up or skate how, when & where you like"...
Well,I chose the latter and I'm still skating 15 years later!  Cheesy

(Well,I've just moved to Canada and haven't been able to buy a new set-up yet,but I live right around the corner from Surf Paradise and they have plenty of longboard stuff,so between them and Ebay I should be skating again soon, fingers crossed!)

Welcome to the great white north mr chinny!

I'm still enjoying discovering new smooth hills as much as I did in 1977 and hope to be doing so until my legs fall off!

HELL YEAH!!!! Grin
The hills around here(Newmarket,Ontario) are long and rolling, sadly not steep and mountainous, but the surfaces (if they've survived the freeze) are almost uniformly smooth,so I can't wait to skate 'em! Smiley Smiley
One thing I've noticed that's changed since I last came here in '01 is that the prices have gone up a lot!
Back then hard goods were nearly half the UK price;now they're nearly the same, maybe 85%. Embarrassed

And, judging by the second pic,HOT!!! Cheesy

Pretty harsh trannies though,eh,what?Get any lippage?

Went to visit my cousin out at Caledon East on Saturday and she has a pool! Funny "meat-cleaver" shape, but skateable at the deep end...assuming she'd ever drain it,which somehow I doubt! Undecided

Anyway, glad to see you're all healed and hard at it again Boomer!

Yeah,I thought those looked like thermal shorts with longjohns peeping out the bottom! Wink
Looking out the window right now you wouldn't guess it's summer here, tipping down with rain as it is,but then again this is maybe only the fifth rainy day we've had here since we arrived 12 weeks ago,and the yellowy-brown lawn sure could do with a drink! 'Sides,it's warmin up from 20C today to 30C by Friday,so shouldn't complain,eh?
What's the price of stuff out there?Much of a homegrown industry,or do they rely on imports mostly like Canada does?
I've got my eye on a Dogtown "For Life" deck at my local shop, and that's $109 which is 52 quid or $127 AUD.

Mind you,I've just stumbled across an online store called www.thelongboardstore.com that have some utter bargains!
A pair of Randal trucks for $40,that's like 12 quid each! Shocked
Or a39" Gravity deck for 31 pounds! Shocked
If I was in the US it'd be free postage, but still pretty cheap to Canada anyway!
Oooh,that's cheered me up! Grin

Hey Chinny

Watch out for import taxes when ordering stuff from the US, I'm always getting stung for a load, especially if it's shipped by UPS - if you're after a longer board why go for anything other than either Landyachtz, Skull or Rayne, all good homegrown Vancouver based companies, or nearer you, what about trying Hogtown http://www.hogtownextreme.com?

Raining here too, but not too slippy if you set up some big ole skull wheels on that board...

I've got a set on a 40 some inch coffin shaped Scarecrow longboard with Holey trucks - scary fast, super turny and silent, it makes even the wet days fun!
