6'1" 230lbs 37 years old in fair shape and I skate 3-4 time a week for a hour to a hour and half and when I fall it takes me 2-3 days to recover to where I can go back out and hit it hard. Of course I am too cool to wear pads or a helmet.....Any other old timers who deal with the same problem with your body taking a long time to heal and what do you do to help besides beer which is my cure....... How about wearing pads?
Even better, try not to slam!
Only messing, I've just turned 35 fat, unfit and I too use the demon they call 'beer' - Reminds me, must dig out my pads and lid from the garage, I think I last wore them about 7 years ago and then put them in a carrier bag and tied it up. I bet they smell a treat now - sounds like a job for the missus (to wash them).
Realistically though, I don't think fitness level always helps recovery times - some people just heal/take pain beter than others. I suppose it's like being a boxer, you can be the fittest most technically able boxer but if you have a glass jaw you're f**ked!

I don't get not wearing pads, but I respect the fact that you should be able to. I see amazing kids skating and always land on their feet. I rarely fall, but when I do I need my pads because I slam hard. I broke my elbow wearing Pro Designed pads on my elbow. As far as fitness goes, I think it makes a difference. My thighs are killing me even after seveal months. Oh and by the way, I have always skateboarded, but I am a vertical rollerskater.

I'm 46, skate vert 3-5 times a week and almost never have an issue with recovering from falls (apart from the time I hooked up, last year, doing a fakie disater, and fell some 12 feet onto my face. Not good.). The reason I don't have a problem is that I always wear a helmet and pads, even on mini-ramps. I'm planning to be still skating vert when I'm 65. Pads are the ONLY long-term strategy

Just to re-emphasise the pads thing. I just spent 4 days in hospital and the next 3 months on crutches after a fall. Did a backside air, landed it, wobbled, toe of back foot touched the ramp and got pulled off the board. Did the splits sideways, puled my pelvis in all sorts of unpleasant ways and ripped muscles - ended up with internal bleeding and on a morphine drip. BUT no damage to knees, elbows or head, even though I went down hard on them. I'm back riding vert now.
